CAL 25s on “CAL Row” in Eastport Annapolis on Spa Creek

NEW: 2011 RACE Calendar

Our site has not been updated in quite a while, but that does not mean that we have been inactive. The Association, centered in Annapolis, MD, has been participating in a full range of activities to include boat maintenance (a critical item for our aging boats), a year round racing schedule to include crew development, social events, and finding good homes for CAL 25s. We hope to touch upon each of these items in this website with regular updates. Once again, Welcome!

The photo at the head of this site shows the CAL 25s on “CAL Row” in Eastport Annapolis on Spa Creek. The background is the Annapolis side. What you can’t see are all the CAL 25s on the other side of the dock! Then we have our little buddy CAL 20 at the end of the row.

The Staff and Management

The Chesapeake Bay CAL 25 Association is a Bay wide organization centered in Annapolis, MD. We are here to further the enjoyment of CAL 25s through racing, cruising, social events, and helping each other keep our CAL 25s glued together. The following folks are the managers the Chesapeake Bay CAL 25 Association organization:

Fleet Captain – Charlie Husar (Chicken Little-1657, Fahrvergnügen-460)
Treasurer – Marty Lostrom (Krigare-1606)
Secretary – Kristi Merritt (CAL Tip’n-1821)
Social Chair – H. Marie Harkenrider (Arctic Tern-1489)

You can get in touch with anybody by dropping an E-Mail to Charlie Husar or Marty Lostrom .

Chesapeake Bay Racing

The CAL 25s participate in a full summer series of races under the aegis of the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association (CBYRA) with a schedule that spans from April to October. We also have one design starts in the summer Eastport Yacht Club (EYC) Beer Can Series on Friday nights, and the winter Annapolis Yacht Club (AYC) Frostbite Races on Sundays from November to March. The CBYRA schedule for 2011 is for 16 races, the Friday night Beer Cans has 10 race days, and the Frostbite series has 14 Sundays (with two short races scheduled each day in the harbor area of Annapolis and the Severn River. If you would like more information on any of these activities please drop an E-Mail.

Racing results appear farther down on this site. For the summer racing, we try to combine a mix of Government marks courses, point-to-point races wit overnights, and short course windward-leeward events. It is always good to have a party associated with racing activities. We will periodically feature special events in these pages.

Neat Events

The summer racing schedule includes two point-to-point races with overnight raft-ups. These have destinations of St, Michaels, MD in May, and “The Middle of Nowhere” (MONR) in July. The destination for the MONR is actually Spaniard’s Neck on the Corsica River at the junction with the Chester River on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Tis indeed a beautiful setting, and your site editor is not even sure that the place has a name other than that the Corsica River Yacht Club has a facility there.

Stay tuned for information on the Spring Luncheon at a site on the Bay. We often have an funsy race over to the luncheon site.

CAL 25 National Rules

In conjunction with the CAL 25 National Association, we are presently going through the details of the posted National rules for CAL 25s to provide full approval from out Fleet. The Chesapeake Fleet recognizes that different regions have different sailing programs and different wind and water conditions to deal with. This leads to some differences in the rules and the interpretation of those rules. We are considering all of that in deliberations. The Chesapeake Fleet has already fully approved the National rules for sails and sail measurement.

Personality of the Month

Morty Lebowitz (you can easily recognize him in the photo) has been a long time CAL 25 owner and sailor in Annapolis. He cruises his boat “Rainbow during the summer (never races), but then gets out his insane urges in the winter. He has been crewing in Frostbite races for over 25 years. Wouldn’t miss it. Morty recently retired from an engineering career with IBM. He and his wife Sandy live in Silver Spring, MD. His boat lives at Whitehall Marina off Whitehallcreek off Whitehall Bay off the Chesapeake just north of Annapolis.
