When I bought the boat in Long Beach, CA, there was so much growth and so many musssels and animals, that I didn't notice the keel movement. When I got the boat home, we lifted it and found that the keel moves several inches side to side and the very bottom of the keel. There is no movement where the hull meets the keel, but a foot and a half of sofrom that point, maybe that is where the cabin sole plywood is attached to the hull, buckeling of the hull is visable. Any thoughts? I would like to know what the Long Beach keel stiffening repairis, thanks ,Miles |

Believe it or not, this is a "feature" and not a defect. All Cal25s do this. We asked the designer at a Dinner in Annapolis many years ago if this was true and he confirmed.
Years ago there was quite some discussion around this "feature" and many tried to stiffen the cabin sole; however, I think the conclusion was that it did not really make the boat go faster. I remember the Long Beach fleet had at least one boat that made such modifications. Perhaps Bob can find the old pictures of this mod.

From My experience boats that have their keels stiffened ARE indeed faster.
But the class rules no longer permit it.
