Hello all, I just moved down to Lafayette from Chicago and found a cal25 for sale. It needs new rigging and I would love to get into sailing but have no clue if this would be an expensive fix. Any information or recommendations are appreciated. Thanks! |

The best thing to do is to take an experienced boat owner (hopefully Cal25 owner) with you to inspect the boat. Most of us are pretty familiar with the usual issues... soft deck rot, transom rot, sagging beam, and general health of the boat.
That being said... I got mine for free and had to do alot of work but it's definitely worth it.
Yes, you'll need to replace the standing rigging (probably every 5-7 years is a good idea). And being that this is a used boat.. who knows how long ago. If it has ANY broken wires in the cables, then that's a sign it's time to replace.
Cost wise... I put my budget at about $1000 year maintenance for my boat, which is probably a bit low, especially when you have to do the initial restore. And most of my stuff I buy used (engine, gas cans, gear, etc.) If you like to shop retail I would multiply that number x3.
Also sotrage is an issue. The cheapest dock space in So Cal is $225/month. Or, about $100/month for dry dock... IF you can locate a trailer which tend to run $1500-$3000 themselves.
So plan on replacing:
standing rigging $300-$400
bottom paint (5 years) $700
deck paint $200
batteries $150
engine service $200
or good used engine $1100
various projects $++++ |

PS... if you are just getting into sailing... depending on your age and physical mobility I would recommend starting out for a season or 2 in a dingy. Something like a nice Laser, FJ, or Lido would be an excellent boat to hone your skills on as you'll have a very immediate connection with forces of sailing. You'll master all the basics very quick and be prepared and confidant to handle a bigger boat when you want. And the cost will be much more reasonable. |
