NOTE: Official revisions are shown in UPPER CASE TYPE.
The Long Beach Fleet V rules slightly update some of these rules.
1. Specifications
1.1 Boats shall be basically unchanged from the design of C. William Lapworth and "as built" by Jensen Marine. Any departure from these standards including hull, sail and rig plan and ballasting shall render the boat ineligible to compete as a Cal-25.
(Note: Ballasting shall not be construed to mean movable gear or equipment.)
2. Racing Instructions
2.1 Boats shall be raced in cruising trim, and owners must recognize the spirit of this requirement. Specifically and in addition to the requirements of Para. 8, when applicable, adequate safety equipment shall be on board when racing. including: life preservers in accordance with the prevailing requirements of the U.S. Coast Guard, fog horn, compass, spare lines, flares, and ground tackle deemed adequate by the Race Committee for
local ambient conditions. Cruising trim shall include bunk pads, and an adequate motor, AND A MINIMUM OF ONE GALLON OF FUEL.
2.2 The standing rigging shall not differ in any way from the original design except as permitted by Para. 7.
2.3 No boat shall be sailed with any person having the majority of their body outboard of the
weather rail OR INCLINED OUTBOARD PAST (OR TO WEATHER OF) VERTICAL.
3. Mainsail
3.1 The luff and foot of the mainsail shall not overlap any portion of the bands placed on the mast and boom. These bands shall conform to the following rules:
A. Each band shall be 3/4 inch wide minimum, and shall contrast in Color with the mast and boom so as to be easily recognized.
B. The top of the lower mast band shall be 3'6" (forty-two inches) above the deck (not the mast step).
C. The bottom of the upper mast band shall be 25'0" (twenty-five feet) above the top of the lower mast band.
D. The boom shall be banded so that the forward edge of the band is 110"" (eleven feet) from the aft edge of the mast.
3.2 The mainsail shall have no more than four battens. The upper and lower battens are restricted to a maximum length of 2'114". while the intermediate pair of battens shall be no longer than 2'3-7/8".
3.3 THE MAINSAIL SHALL ATTACH TO THE MAST WITH SLIDES AND MUST ATTACH TO THE BOOM ALONG THE FULL LENGTH OF THE FOOT.
4 - Headsails
4.1 The maximum "L.P." of any headsail shall be limited to 15'01 (fifteen feet), which is 150% Of the "J".
(Note: "L.P." of any headsail is the length of the line perpendicular to the luff of the sail which intersects the clew, measured from luff to clew. "J" is the actual foretriangle base length .
4.2 All headsails shall be tacked to the stem of the boat, and shall be flown inside the spinnaker sheets when the spinnaker is set.
5. Spinnaker
5.1 The spinnaker shall be limited in size by a luff and a leach of 29' 9-5/8" x 18'0" each maximum, and a foot and girth each of 18'0" maximum.
(NOTE: GIRTH IS MEASURED AT MAXIMUM SAIL WIDTH.)
5.2 MINIMUM WEIGHT SHALL BE 3/4 OZ. FOR NATIONALLY SANCTIONED RACES.
6. Spinnaker Pole. MAST, SPREADERS. AND BOOM
6.1 The maximum spinnaker pole length shall be 10'0". The measurement shall be made as follows:
A. With the pole set in the mast fitting in a horizontal position and perpendicular to the center- line of the boat, measure from the extreme outboard end of the pole to the centerline of the mast.
6.2 MASTS SHALL BE OF EXTRUDED ALUMINUM WITH CONSTANT CROSS SECTION; I.E., NOT TAPERED. IF THE MAST HAS A SLOT, THE MAIN SHALL ATTACH WITH SLIDES AND NOT UTILIZE A BOLT ROPE. MAST HEAD DESIGN SHALL CONFORM TO FIGURE I AND BE FABRICATED OF ALUMINUM. FABRICATION METHOD IS OPTIONAL. TANGS AND THEIR LOCATION AND MOUNTING HARDWARE SHALL CONFORM TO FIGURE 1. MAST CROSS SECTION MUST BE SYMMETRICAL ABOUT BOTH FORE AND AFT AS WELL AS TRANSVERSE AXES; I.E. THE FRONT HALF OF THE MAST MUST BE THE SAME SHAPE AS THE AFTER HALF, ETC. MAST CROSS SECTION SHALL BE BETWEEN 5. 7" MINIMUM AND 6.6" MAXIMUM FORE AND AFT, AND WIDTH BETWEEN 3.4- MINIMUM AND 3.6" MAXIMUM. EXTRUSION WEIGHT SHALL BE 1.8 POUNDS PER LINEAR FOOT MINIMUM. (EXAMPLE: PROCTOR EXTRUSION #5736).
(NOTE: HOLES ADDED FOR THE PURPOSE OF LIGHTENING THE MAST ARE FORBIDDEN.)
6.3 SPREADERS SHALL BE OF CIRCULAR CROSS SECTION WITH MINIMUM DIAMETER OF 1.25". LENGTH SHALL BE 3211 MINIMUM AND 35-3/8@' MAXIMUM. ATTACHMENT TO THE MAST SHALL CONFORM TO FIGURE I OR EQUIVALENT.
6.4 THE BOOM SHALL BE OF EXTRUDED ALUMINUM OF CONSTANT CROSS SECTION; I.E., WITHOUT TAPER. EXTRUSION WEIGHT SHALL BE 0.9 POUNDS PER LINEAR FOOT MINIMUM. CROSS SECTION HEIGHT SHALL BE BETWEEN 3.0" MINIMUM AND
3.5" MAXIMUM. WIDTH SHALL BE BETWEEN 2.3" MINIMUM AND 2.6" MAXIMUM. (NOTE: HOLES ADDED FOR THE PURPOSE OF LIGHTENING THE BOOM ARE FORBIDDEN.) DIMENSIONS SHALL CONFORM TO FIGURE 2.
